HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component.
Four of the most common hardware interfaces in the industry, and also the most frequently confused. Here's a little HiDef help, listed in order of highest quality to least.
HDMI
HDMI is a full digital, uncompressed interconnect which transmits video and audio from device to device. Examples include from cable/satellite box to amplifier, or from DVD to display. HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface.
DVI
The DVI standard is a digital video only connection. A DVI port can be found on anything from a computer to a plasma display, to a cable box. The acronym DVI stands for Digital Video Interface.
VGA
VGA stands for Video Graphics Array, and is most frequently seen on computers, and projectors.
Component/RGB
Component, or RGB transmit the three primary video colors Red, Green and Blue in one cable with RCA terminals. While this is an analog connector, it is capable of full high definition signals.
